4 Day Amazon Tour
By plane from Cusco (three daily departures), you can arrive in Puerto Maldonado in an hour, right in the Peruvian Amazon. This is located on the Tambopata River, which will lead you straight to the Tambopata National Reserve.
Your host in Puerto Maldonado is Corto Maltes and their lodge is located 10 km from the city of Puerto Maldonado and is surrounded by three different sanctuaries: the Tambopata National Reserve, Biosphere Reserve Manu, and the Reserve Candamo Bahuaja Sonene. Within these sanctuaries are a great variety of eco-systems that represents native flora and fauna, 165 different trees, 103 species of mammals, 1300 species of butterflies and 90 species of amphibians.
Not included in this package are the flight tickets to and from Puerto Maldonado. However, we will help you arrange these. The reason that we cannot include these tickets is because the prices fluctuate.
Day 1:
We'll pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and take you to the airport where you'll board your flight to Puerto Maldonado. Upon your arrival, the staff from Corto Maltes will welcome you at the airport of Puerto Maldonado and take you (40 minutes) by motorized canoe, to their lodge.
After your arrival at the lodge of Corto Maltes, a welcome cocktail will be waiting for you and you will have free time to settle into your private bungalow and relax or explore the area around the lodge.
Lunch.
After lunch, we will take you on your first walking excursion of approximately 3 hours, which will lead us into the tropical forest to discover a great variety of medicinal plants, tropical trees, insects and butterflies. On the trail, we will stop at a viewpoint where we will have the opportunity to observe toucans and other birds.
Return to the lodge, and at sunset a boat-trip for a ‘caiman safari'.
Overnight at the lodge in your private bungalow
Day 2:
An early rise and before breakfast we'll prepare ourselves for a short (20 minutes) walk to the "collpa" where at least 5 different species of parrots come down from the trees to eat a special type of clay indispensable for their metabolism.
8:00 AM: Breakfast and free time to relax in your hammocks or explore the nearby trails.
10:30 AM: we will board our motorized canoe for an expedition to Monkey Island, where different species of monkeys live in total freedom. After exploring Monkey Island, we embark and travel for 30 minutes until a place from where it's a 5 km walk through exuberant tropical vegetation in order to arrive at the magical Lake Sandoval. Lunch will be served here.
At Lake Sandoval, we can observe numerous species of animals, like the Giant Otter; birds like the Hoatzin, the Kingfisher and Snakebird; many monkeys like the Howler Monkeys, Squirrel Monkeys and Capuchins. Among the fishes, the Piranha is the most famous and the giant Paiche that can measure up to 2.50m and weigh over 200kgs. All of this can be discovered comfortably by canoeing until sundown. We will return to the river at night to see some nocturnal animals.
8:00 PM: Dinner is served at the lodge. After dinner, we can enjoy the uncountable stars from the relaxing deckchairs at the veranda, or play pool in the adjacent lounge. Overnight at the lodge in your private bungalow
Day 3:
8:00 AM: Breakfast and free time to relax or swim in the pool.
10:00 AM: We will board a motorized boat, which will take us to a native community located at 1.5 hours from the lodge. On the way, we might see some monkeys, river turtles, caimans and birds.
The community we will visit is called "Palma Real" and is the biggest in the area with approximately 200 families of the Ese'eja tribe. The project called "Project for the Rescue of Cultural Values" functions with help of two families who will introduce you to the cultural values of their ancestors, their language, their customs and their dances. In an era where globalization rapidly changes old customs this is a great opportunity to have a direct contact with this tribe who lived in this area of the Peruvian Amazon for many decades. Additionally, this is a perfect opportunity to support them economically with the purchase of some of their handmade products.
1:00 PM: While circling around the Gamatida Island, we can occasionally see animals trying to hide away. After having visited this project, we will visit a local farm where we will see a great variety of local products, especially exotic fruits (which can be tasted!). Lunch will be served here as well.
Once in the lodge you'll have some free till dinner time to refresh yourself in the pool, or to drink a exotic cocktail at the bar.
8:00 PM: Dinner time.
Day 4:
7:45 AM: After breakfast, we embark for the return trip to Puerto Maldonado. Before we head to the airport, we will visit Puerto Maldonado's colourful local market (only possible when having a late flight). The visit to the local market can also be scheduled on day 1 of your arrival at Puerto Maldonado. This depends on the arrival and departure time of your flights.
