Andean South Inn
Sustainability
Andean South Inn has been operating since February 2009 and is a pretty new face on the Cusco hotel scene. The owner Ivan Huaman was originally an architect, but luckily for him his fiancée has studied hotel management. The history of this hostel is quite a funny story. It all started in 2007 when the original owner of the property told Ivan to construct a hostel. Ivan started with full enthusiasm for this new project, but soon after this optimistic start the owner couldn't pay the bills anymore. After some thought, eventually Ivan bought the property on where he already started building and finished the hostel. In total it took him almost 2 years to get the hostel as it is today.
The hostel with the restaurant turned this part of San Blas into a more attractive scene and it has become a safe area to walk also at night.
Caring for destination
This accommodation provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.
Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:
Promoting art from local people and offering jobs to less the fortunate.
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
All over this hotel you'll find sculptures, paintings and other sorts of art made by the hands of local artists from the Cusquena School of Arts. All these artists need a place to show and sell their art and the owner of Hotel Andean South Inn, Ivan Huaman, supports them by offering available space in his hotel.
Andean South Inn works together with the NGO Inmenso. This institute offers several job/study opportunities to poor children from communities around Cusco. They send educated people to the hostel and Ivan offers them jobs and/or internships. His restaurant chef was one of those persons sent to the hotel by Inmenso and he has now been promoted to the restaurant manager.
