Hostel Koyllur
Your Host
Merily and Veruska began in the hotel business in the end of 1999, when many people needed a place to stay in Cusco to bring in the end of the century. They even rented out their own rooms to offer people a place to sleep. The first years they ran the hostel alone with help of their parents. Quite an opportunistic start for a couple that studied informatics and economics respectively. In the beginning, they would spend the day caring for the rooms and in the evening they had to pick up their clients from the bus station. The Guevaras have certainly come a long way since then!
Choosing a name was simple, since the family is very closely connected with the famous Coyllu Rit'i festival, or Koyllur Rit'i, which takes places every year in June and September in the higher Cusco region called Ocongate.
For 20 years they have attended this festival, which lasts for 3 days and over the years their group of followers has grown to almost 100 friends.
Weeks before the festival they start practicing the typical dances of Siclla and Sarascha in Cusco, so their performance at the festival will be a great success.
Together with all their luggage they take food, milk, clothes, shoes, pencils and other supplies to give to the poor villages on their way during their pilgrimage.
Additionally, they travel together with a group of doctors who examine all the children in the village of Ocongate after they have shared lunch with them. First, they prepare lunch and warm drinks at a specific location for the children, then the children form a line so the doctors will have the opportunity to check every child for diseases.
