The Small Luxury Guesthouse
Sustainability
Andres Zuniga is the owner of "The" Luxury Guesthouse which has been fully operational since July 2009. It all began with the Fallen Angel restaurant and he ran it for seven years on the first floor of the building, while using part of the second floor as his apartment. Then word started spreading about the restaurant and more and more friends from all over the world came to the restaurant and also needed a place to stay. Since Andres is often out of town, he decided his friends could use his apartment while they stayed in Cusco. However, some friends decided to stay longer than expected so he needed to build a new apartment for himself. Luckily, the second floor is big enough and so little by little the 4 huge rooms were build, all with the intent make sure his friends and relatives had a place to stay in Cusco.
Today, the 4 rooms are furnished and decorated completely in his style as it used to be his own apartment.
Caring for destination
This accommodation provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.
Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:
"The" Small Luxury Guesthouse is active on many issues concerning sustainable tourism in the region. From waste-management to using local products, where possible they will participate.
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
"The Luxury Guesthouse has several projects running all with the purpose of improving sustainable/ecological tourism in the region of Cusco.
In all the rooms they are using a special heating system which works on bio-ethanol. All the trash is being separated and transported to Limatambo (organic trash) or it is collected by a company in Cusco who recycles paper, cartons and plastic. Besides this you'll find pieces of art all over the place. The hotel offers places to artists from Cusco who can show their work in order to sell it.
Regarding to water management the hotel has a unique policy regarding sheets and towels. When the client is happy with his/her sheets or towel he/she can leave them in its place, but when he/she would like to have new sheets and/or towels the guest can put them on the ground. All the toilets have a special flush, which is saving litres of water when flushing it.
All the products are being bought locally and also the staff is made up of local people. When they need products from Lima, they try to contact different users selling the same products and create one big order instead of many small orders. Similarly, they order their wine together with a big chain of restaurants in Cusco.
Last but not least the hotel is investigating the option of having solar panels on its roof.
