Cusco Local Events
Cusco comes alive during the many Cusco events and festivals and they make an ideal time to visit the city. The Lord of Tremors is a festival that celebrates the amalgamation of the religion of the Peruvians with that of Christianity. It is commemorative of the traditional idea that in 1650, Christ of the Good Death stopped an earthquake that threatened to wipe out Cusco. The Cusco Beer Festival is another major attraction. Held either in late May or June, it attracts hordes of visitors from all over the world. The Cusco Festival of Corpus Christi is celebrated across Peru but it assumes a unique flavour in Cusco. It involves a procession of the saints and virgins from all over the region who converge in Cusco and gather in the main cathedral in the late morning. The other festival of note is the Inti Raymi, held since the times of the existence of the Inca Empire. It is a celebration of the Sun God. The strikingly coloured attire of the Peruvians all through the procession contrasts vividly against the greyish pallor of the buildings and ruins.
Carnivals are always big, lively affairs throughout South America. Although a little subdued in Peru, they are not to be missed, especially if you intend to travel to Cusco in February.
